Set on a dramatic 20-acre site north of Lyons in the foothills of Larimer County, Shastano is a modern retreat that merges Scandinavian simplicity with mountain-modern sensibilities. Oriented along a high point on the property, the home captures 360-degree views of the surrounding hills and valleys, with each architectural gesture carefully crafted to embrace the site’s expansive natural beauty. Replacing an existing house and garage lower on the site, the new single-story residence steps gently into the hillside, taking full advantage of both elevation and orientation. The home comprises three distinct volumes: the main living area, the private primary suite, and a two-car garage—strategically arranged to balance functionality with framed views. The primary suite is thoughtfully rotated to capture a precise vista selected by the homeowner. The design is unified by a series of floating, sloped roof lines that echo the rhythms of the surrounding topography while introducing dramatic interior volumes and continuous clerestory glazing. These elevated roof lines visually lift the building from the land, inviting natural light deep into the home from all directions. At the center of the plan, a glass-walled connection unites the volumes and frames an internal courtyard. Large windows and sliding doors further dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior, allowing the living areas to spill out into terraces, patios, and the native landscape beyond. The exterior palette draws directly from the color tones of the surrounding stone formations, using natural wood, muted stucco, and dark metal trim in hues of deep brown and ocher. These materials and tones ground the architecture in its environment, allowing the home to harmonize with the land while expressing a crisp, modern aesthetic.
